I had just finished watching The Mighty Flyers wind up a night at the Blue Cafe in Long Beach. Rod was loading some gear into his car in the parking lot. I went up and introduced myself and told him that I was interested in one of his customized harmonica mics. He looked at me through his dark sunglasses (it was 2:00 A.M.) and then slyly glanced back and forth, as if he was checking to make sure we weren’t being watched. Then he mutters, “You got the bread on you?” When I told him I didn’t, he handed me a business card with his number on it and told me to give him a call.
I called him later that week and drove out to his place in Riverside to pick up the mic. He met me at the front door and was very nice. Explained to me how he had just gone through several crystals to find the one he put in my mic. We chatted a bit about mics and amps. Really nice guy. Total showman!
